What is a Career Change?

Most people think of a career change as a totally new career direction. For example, a Lawyer decides to become a Financial Planner or a Teacher decides to take up events coordination. But a career change can also include a major change in role within an organisation. For instance, after many years of running a busy kitchen, a Chef may be asked to take on a managerial role in another part of the hotel where they have worked. Yet another example of a career change is where a person leaves their organisation to work for some other company. This may entail a very different work environment. For example, a person moving from the public to the private sector will find that the work environment may operate quite differently in their new career.

Why do people make a career change?

There are many reasons why people make a career change. Here are just a few:

To advance their career opportunities in the organisation or in another organisation
To resume paid employment after a lengthy period of not doing paid work
Retirement or illness may have necessitated a change to a less demanding occupation
Restructuring within the work place or a take over may have resulted in a person becoming redundant

However we know that many people see a career change as necessary because they simply feel burnt out in their current job.

Clearly, more significant career changes require more in depth exploration of these questions. As a practitioner with a special interest in Career Change I can help you find the answers to these questions and assist you through the step by step process of planning your Career Change.
